What Is Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel?

Precipitation hardening stainless steel, which is called PH Steel, refers to the kind of stainless steel which adds different types and quantities of strengthening elements, and different types and quantities of carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides and intermetallic compounds are precipitated through the precipitation hardening process. Precipitation hardening stainless steel not only has high strength, but also has good toughness and corrosion resistance. The precipitation hardening stainless steel could be cast at our investment casting foundry as per your drawings, requirements and usage situation.

According to the content of the main alloy elements in precipitation hardening stainless steel and the added hardening elements, precipitation hardnening stainless steel can be divided into four categories in the following:
(1) Martensitic Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel. It generally contains carbon in less than 0.1%. Strengthen by adding hardening elements (copper, aluminum, titanium and aluminum, etc.) to make up for the lack of strength. The chromium content is generally higher than 17%, and an appropriate amount of nickel is added to improve the corrosion resistance.
(2) Maraging Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel, with carbon content not higher than 0.03% to ensure the toughness, corrosion resistance, weldability and workability of the martensite matrix, and 12% chromium to ensure corrosion resistance. In addition, the alloy element cobalt is added to further improve the heat treatment effect of the steel.
(3) Semi-Austenitic Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel, that is, transitional precipitation hardening stainless steel, containing no less than 12% chromium. It has low carbon content, and aluminum as its main precipitation hardening element. This kind of precipitation hardening stainless steel has better overall performance than martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel.
(4) Austenitic Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel is a stainless steel with stable austenite structure in both quenched and aging states. Its nickel content and manganese content are high, and the chromium content is higher than 13% to ensure good corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. At the same time, austenitic precipitation hardening stainless steel usually adds titanium, aluminum, vanadium or phosphorus as precipitation hardening elements, and adds a small amount of boron, vanadium, nitrogen and other elements to obtain excellent comprehensive properties.

Precipitation hardening stainless steel is widely used in advanced industries. For example, the typical precipitation hardening stainless steel 17-4PH can be used to make structures below 370°C that require corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high strength.
