Material introduction
16MnCr5 alloy steel, a high-quality low alloy steel originating from Germany, is known as the representative of high-performance gear steel. In China, it is often called 16CrMnH (according to GB/T 5216-2004 standard). This material has occupied a place in the field of high-end gear castings manufacturing due to its excellent carburizing performance, excellent hardenability and good machinability. After carburizing and quenching treatment, the surface hardness of 16MnCr5 alloy steel forgings is significantly improved and the wear resistance is greatly enhanced. It is an ideal choice for manufacturing parts that bear heavy loads and frequent friction.
Chemical composition and microstructure
The chemical composition of 16MnCr5 alloy steel has been carefully proportioned to ensure its excellent mechanical properties:
C: 0.14%~0.19%, providing the necessary strength and hardness for steel.
Si: ≤0.40%, helps to improve the thermal stability and oxidation resistance of steel.
Mn: 1.00%~1.30%, enhances the hardenability and toughness of steel.
Cr: 0.80%~1.10%, significantly improves the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of steel.
S: ≤0.035%, controls the thermal brittleness of steel.
P: ≤0.035%, improves the strength and resistance to atmospheric corrosion of steel.
Mechanical properties
16MnCr5 alloy steel has excellent mechanical properties and can meet the needs of stringent industrial applications:
Tensile strength (MPa): 880-1180, ensuring the stability of parts when subjected to huge tensile forces.
Conditional yield strength (MPa): usually around 635 (the specific value may vary depending on the heat treatment process), ensuring the material's load-bearing capacity before yielding.
Elongation (%): 9, indicating that the material has good plasticity and is not easy to break when subjected to force.
Sectional reduction (%): 57 (or 35, depending on test conditions and specimen size), reflecting the material's energy absorption capacity before breaking.
Impact toughness value (J/cm²): 34, proving the material's toughness when subjected to impact.
Hardness: ≤297 HB, providing a good foundation for subsequent carburizing and quenching treatment.
